Newton: Who regulates elections in India?

Nyaaya

In the movie ‘Newton’, we see Rajkummar Rao as a government clerk on election duty trying to conduct free and fair voting in the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh. Do you know which organisation is responsible for regulating  elections in India?

The Election Commission of India regulates elections through a Model Code of Conduct (MCC) which lays down how political parties, contesting candidates and parties in power should conduct themselves during the election process of elections. The MCC governs their general conduct during campaigning, holding meetings and processions, poll day activities and functioning of the party in power etc.

To know more about what is allowed during election campaigning, read our explainer.
