Do you think you can recognise child labour in every situation? Consider these situations and see if you can identify which ones refer to child labour. Answer ‘Yes’ if you think the situation invloves child labour, and ‘No’ if not. 

 

Remember ‘child’ refers to anyone below 14 years, and ‘adolescent’ refers to anyone between 14-18 years.

Fact: The law prohibits the employment of adolescents in certain hazardous occupations and processes including mining, domestic work, handloom industry, firecracker industry, etc. 

 

  1. Your niece has been playing tennis from a young age, and begins competing professionally at tennis tournaments in the Under-13 category.

Fact: Children are allowed to work towards sports activities, and this is not considered child labour.

 

  1. Sonu’s parents own a circus in which all the acts are performed by family members. Sonu, along with other children, puts on an acrobatics show for the circus.

Fact: No child is allowed to work in a circus. 

 

  1. Your friend’s child starts acting in films, and advertisements promoting health drinks for kids.

Fact: Children are allowed to work as child artists in the audio-visual entertainment industry (including advertisements, films and television serials).

 

  1. A 17-year-old takes up employment as a tutor in a coaching centre.

  2. No

Fact: Adolescents can take up non-hazardous employment with regulated working conditions.
