Section 5 of the Indian Christian Marriage Act provides that marriages can be solemnized by a minister of religion or a marriage registrar. The former is authorised by the worship centre (for example, the priest of a Church) while the latter is appointed by the government. The term marriage officer is used not in this Act but the Special Marriage Act. It refers to a person appointed by the government to solemnize and register marriages
